What is Nature Positive?

Nature Positive(Opens in a new tab/window) is a global societal goal defined as ‘halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 on a 2020 baseline, and achieve full recovery by 2050’.

For business, this means a new way of operating, strategising and collaborating. We need a transformational shift towards a nature positive economy.

What is the Nature Positive Matters initiative?

Launched at the Global Nature Positive Summit, Nature Positive Matters is a public-private initiative to accelerate Australia's transition to a nature positive future.

It establishes a network of leaders from the private sector who recognise the importance of nature positive. The network is committed to collaborating on a program of work that strengthens nature-related action including reporting and investment, and embedding nature into decision-making.

Why join Nature Positive Matters?

Corporates are under growing pressure from consumers, investors, employees, communities and governments to integrate sustainability into their core business. Businesses need the confidence and support to advance and promote their nature positive actions and avoid greenwashing.

Nature Positive Matters provides a platform for leaders to promote proven nature positive capabilities. Members will shape frameworks and activities that are fit-for-purpose to support businesses to accelerate action and drive further impact of nature positive initiatives across sectors.

What are the economic benefits of becoming an early mover?

  • Businesses who start to assess their dependency and impact on nature build their resilience to uncertain and unstable environmental conditions, by identifying risks early and building mitigation and adaptation into their entire business model
  • Such businesses also prepare themselves for regulatory and governance oversight, ensuring ongoing access to capital from financial institutions that are increasingly considering nature impact in their investment decisions and continuing social licence to operate
  • They also position themselves to take advantage of opportunities that develop, as the economic value of nature becomes broadly accepted and subsequent market niches emerge. For example:
    • As natural capital stocks are increasingly recognised and valued, their preservation and replenishment becomes a source of revenue
    • Protection and shielding services – e.g. reforesting above a flood zone to reduce the infrastructural damage of moving water – can be commercialised
    • Demand for nature-based or impact-minimising solutions increases

Through the Nature Positive Matters network, businesses will be able to better align and deliver strategies with national and global goals for nature. Cross-sector collaboration will promote innovation and build shared understanding of risks and opportunities.

What is the Nature Finance Council?

The Nature Positive Matters initiative was supported by the Chair and members of the Nature Finance Council(Opens in a new tab/window); in line with its mission to increase private sector financial flows to benefit nature. The Council supports the growing awareness and importance of holistic consideration of climate and nature and the need for further work on mainstreaming nature in corporate decision making.
